The aim of this paper is to highlight the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on life expectancy by constructing abridged life tables by cause of death for the population of Greece, differentiated by gender, for the period 2020-2021.
At first, the characteristics of the virus and the events that took place in the country during the pandemic are analyzed. A reference is made to the mortality levels in Europe and Greece, as well as the effects the pandemic had on the insurance sector.
Subsequently, the concept of mortality is introduced. It is followed by an analysis of the methods of collecting mortality data and the proper categorization of these deaths by cause. The indicators that are useful for calculating mortality levels are also being discussed, along with the categories of life tables by cause, with the most significant being the multiple-decrement life table, which examines the probability of an individual dying from a specific cause when all other causes are interacting, and the single-decrement life table, which examines the likelihood of an individual surviving in the absence of a particular cause of death. Following this, the methodology for constructing an abridged life table for all causes, and consequently a life table by cause, is described.
Finally, an abridged life table by gender is constructed for the period 2020-2021, as well as an abridged life table by cause for the same period, using the single-decrement life table method for the same period, focusing on the causes of Covid-19, heart and respiratory diseases. An abridged life table is also created for the year 2019, during which Covid-19 was not present as a cause of death, and the key conclusions drawn from the comparison of these tables are presented.
