The present master thesis explores the emerging technology of Network Function Virtualization (NFV) within large-scale Data centers in terms of energy consumption. The thesis examines and presents a focused literature review, as well as real-world cases of adopting NFV technology. The major contribution of the present thesis is the introduction of a simplistic yet intuitive methodology of measuring energy consumption and making a direct comparison between an NFV enabled router-firewall and its physical counterpart. The measurements indicate a clear advancement of the NFV-enabled router-firewall.
