In this Thesis firstly we define what sustainable development is and discuss how this definition and the practices employed have changed over the years in response to the challenges humanity is facing. In addition, some of the main events that occurred from 1962 to 2012 worldwide that involved decision-making to improve people's quality of life and the state of the planet itself are attached. Next, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are described in detail and how they are grouped according to the overall goals. For each goal, certain indicators and sub-targets, sixteen countries in total (four from each continent) have been selected in order to have a general picture of exactly where each country is and indicatively the continent to which they belong in relation to the achievement of sustainable development. This Thesis summarizes the conclusions and the data from these comparisons, as well as the prospects for a sustainable future.
