Sustainable development is a term that is gaining increasing attention in our days. For this purpose, actions are being taken and a relevant legislative framework is being developed so that the progress in sustainability issues can be achieved and monitored (in non-governmental organizations, companies, and countries). In this thesis, the aviation sector will be analyzed in relation to sustainability regarding the impact that it has to both the environment and society. More specifically, 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the above sector's activities. On a global scale, Aegean Airlines, Lufthansa Group, Scandinavian Airlines, Qantas Airways, American Airlines, and Qatar Airways are some examples of airlines that are prominent in their respective countries. By comparing these companies, conclusions are drawn regarding their performance on ESG issues and the strategies they pursue. Their material issues are compared and an analysis of their human resources and fleet is also conducted. In addition, the ASK index is used for comparing greenhouse gas emissions and graphical representations are generated to provide direct comparative results. Finally, it worths mentioning that the different methods the companies are using for reporting their performance on sustainable development issues, is making difficult the direct comparison between them. Overall, the industry seems to understand the impacts it has on the environment and society and is taking corresponding actions to mitigate them.
