Abstract

The pharmaceutical supply chain includes the manufacture, distribution and shipment of products to end users. It is a complex and highly regulated network. The pharmaceutical supply chain is specifically designed to guarantee the accessibility, integrity and safety of pharmaceutical products. The core elements of the pharmaceutical supply chain include research to develop new pharmaceutical agents. However, the development of new drugs requires extensive clinical trials and regulatory approvals. include this phase. Strict quality control standards are imperative for pharmaceutical manufacturers to adhere to in order to ensure the safety and efficacy of drugs. Pharmaceutical products are transported from manufacturing facilities to wholesalers, distributors, and ultimately to pharmacies, hospitals, and other healthcare providers during the distribution process. Ensuring timely access to medicines and preventing stockouts depend on efficient distribution. Distributors serve as intermediaries in the relationship between health care providers and retailers or manufacturers. They procure drugs from manufacturers in bulk and then distribute them to pharmacies and health care facilities, most importantly supplying patients. Pharmaceutical preparations require special care during storage and transport and in many cases a controlled temperature is required. The above leads to a complex distribution and storage network. In many cases this uncontrolled network leads to delays resulting in shortages in the market as well as spoilage or expiration of the formulations, resulting in their loss. The pharmaceutical supply chain landscape is expected to change as technological advances, including the incorporation of Pharma 4.0 principles, are used to enhance the transparency, traceability and overall efficiency of the pharmaceutical supply chain.
