The integration and utilization of source-separated collection systems constitute a very important tool that allows us to optimize waste/resource management, within the framework of achieving ambitious national and European goals for waste recycling. Simultaneously adopting and implementing the latest technical and technological capabilities further enhances this process, leading to the transition from conventional waste management practices to smart city-level management practices. The significant variation in packaging waste diversion rates (paper, plastic, metal, composite materials, and glass) observed in Europe, even among municipalities with similar characteristics, confirms that there are substantial opportunities to increase the quantity of these materials that can be recovered. An additional 18 million tons of waste could be collected annually in Europe if strategic collection practices are implemented, resulting in a 13% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions related to packaging and packaging waste. High collection efficiency is vital for the efficient use of resources, and improving source-separated waste collection systems is crucial for achieving recycling goals. Equally important is the active participation of citizens, which research shows is very positive towards adopting smart methods of waste separation and collection at the household level. The combination of new technologies and citizen-friendly practices will contribute to optimal methods of separating and collecting recyclables at the source.
