This diploma thesis is a study of the smart city’s ecosystem and the issues that may arise from its operation regarding the protection of personal data of the people residing in it. Initially, there is a presentation of the concept of smart city, how it works, the parties involved, as well as examples of smart cities worldwide, in order to better understand the context of this study. Then, there is a presentation of the concept of Internet of Things and the ways it contributes to the operation of the smart city. Next, the
security and privacy issues that may arise in the context of the smart city from the collection and processing of citizens' data are presented, as well as the legislative framework that governs them. Finally, the main points of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) , the problems of its implementation in the smart city ecosystem and ways in which the compliance of smart cities with it can be achieved are presented .
