One of the biggest problems the planet is facing nowadays is environmental degradation and air pollution. Road transport is one of the most critical sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Trying to reduce the negative impact of transportation sector on the environment, governments are trying to introduce environmentally friendly transport alternatives. Electromobility and new technologies have gained a lot of attention.
This diploma thesis examines the different categories of electric vehicles, as well as their advantages and disadvantages and their share in the passenger vehicle market.
Considering that in the next decade the share of electric passenger vehicles is expected to reach 60%, great importance is given by governments to increase the charging infrastructure accordingly. At the same time, the increase in charging needs is expected to put a strain on the power grid.
In this context, this paper examines the integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the charging of electric vehicles. It analyses the use of new and smart technologies as well as the motivations that encourage and facilitate vehicle charging at times of low demand or at times of high availability of renewable energy.
Finally, some recent developments (technologies/applications) in the field of electric vehicle charging are presented.
