This study deals with the implementation of the FSA on ships by examining its contribution in times of pandemics. A pandemic is defined as any health crisis rapidly spreading worldwide affecting the social-political-economic and environmental balances. Subsequently, the structure of the specific financial instrument (FSA) is analyzed, as well as the steps it includes (Hazard Identification, RA, RCO, Cost and Benefits options, Decision Making). According to the study, the FSA is implemented by the stakeholders aiming to prevent or solve any difficult incident related to shipping (in this case fatality), always having in mind an unbreakable cost-benefit balance. Following this, a record of the existing measures to prevent and deal with the modern Coronavirus pandemic (onboard, onshore, office) are identified and recorded. Afterwards, the study assesses the existing risk and identifies three (3) new measures (RCO) to deal with pandemics on the ships of a Greek shipping company. In conclusion, a techno-economic study is being carried out through the FSA analyzing the three (3) new proposed measures and evaluating their efficiency, economic impact and sustainable implementation and finally, the most efficient one is being recommended.
