In the educational system, mentoring is a complex and multidimensional process
of guiding and teaching. A mentor in education has specific goals and objectives and
must have characteristics such as mutual respect, the ability to understand deeply, a
cooperative attitude, honesty, integrity and experience. In addition, a mentor must have
a range of interpersonal skills adapted to different professional situations, but also be
able to apply effective, but also alternative teaching and learning methods.
In education, the teacher is the primary element. Therefore, new teachers should
be fully committed to training from the beginning. A well-designed mentoring program
can play a key role in introducing new teachers to education. Thus, there is a great need
for careful planning. For this purpose, an appropriate mentoring approach must be
established and young teachers as agents for the next generation must design and
develop an effective mentoring program.
This paper presents the main findings of questionnaires completed by Primary
and Secondary teachers in Greece. The purpose of this paper is to record the opinions of
the teachers of the above levels regarding the institution and the role of the mentor with
the questionnaires we managed to gather (54 questionnaires from young teachers and 68
questionnaires from older teachers) and to highlight the difficulties and problems faced
by both the newly appointed teachers and the more experienced ones, in relation to the
establishment of the mentor institution in the Greek education system.
In conclusion, the data collection provided a more complete understanding of the
role of the mentor and the mentoring and induction programs in Greece. The collected
data help us to better understand the above concepts through the comparative study of
questionnaires based on the location of the school (big cities, province, islands), the type
of school (public or private) and the teaching experience of the teachers (years of
experience).
