Abstract

The current Master thesis conducts a research regarding the role that the contribution leniency programs share in the detection and collusion through four relevant case studies plus the empirical analysis evidence. As far as the first topic under discussion is concerned, this involves the Competition Policy, the Competition Authorities and the legislative framework of the meaning under research either within national or international range. Secondly, the meaning of collusion on a theoretical level is subjected to a more detailed analysis, but most importantly into algebraic level as part of the game theory and more specifically of the prisoners’ dilemma of a theoretical and business nature. Certainly, it is without doubt that the algebraic analysis of deviation from collusion, and the imposition of retaliatory measures should be analyzed in order to realize the differentiation regarding the number of periods that the game is repeated. Another feature which holds a prominent position is the presentation concerning the Competition Authorities mechanisms, which in turn, contribute to the revelation of collusion and illegal behaviors of the part of businesses which aim at the distortion of competition. Additionally, this case study is presented using empirical analyses and theories which rely on the above mentioned mechanisms for reasons of clarity. Last but not least, great emphasis is placed in case studies the results of which are presented and attached in this master thesis and serve us a source of interest when these are put under a comparative analysis. Finally, the conclusions for this discussion stem from the empirical analysis which is performed though the OLS regression targeting at determining the significance of the contribution of the leniency program in the cartel detection.
