The present essay aims to the comprehension of tourists’ behavior regarding the choice of moving to different places during their trips and not staying in a specific destination. In more details, the research investigates the reasons why the route is more important for some travelers than the final destination.
The first chapter presents the alternative tourism and its forms, its benefits, the differences between alternative and mass tourists as well as some global statistics of alternative tourism.
The second chapter analyzes adventure tourism. More specifically, it contains the activities of this kind of tourism, the characteristics of the travelers who choose the specific type and some statistics from all over the world. In addition, there is an extensive reference to backpacking and road trips and the differences between tourists who choose one destination and those who visit several areas during their trip.
In order to investigate the purpose of this research a qualitative research was carried out through individual interviews with 8 people, 5 of whom were adventurous tourists and the remaining 3 were more conventional. Thus, the third chapter highlights the research methodology regarding the sample, the conformation of the interviews, the duration of the research (6 months) and the difficulties that arose during its implementation.
The fourth chapter presents the results of the interviews and the conclusions of the research.
