This master's thesis deals with the issue of the overthrow of the legitimate government of Guatemala in 1954. The business strategy of the United Fruit Company, a veritable titan of industry and the preeminent representative of American interests in Central America, had an enormous influence on the decision-making of the US government and the Company was heavily implicated in the planning and execution of the coup. Having spearheaded the expansion of US interests in Latin America for over half a century, United Fruit tried to salvage its business interests that were threatened by the Guatemalan government using the political, diplomatic and military power of the United States, in order to impose its will upon the Guatemalan government.
The United Fruit Company utilised three main axes in organising its business strategy; the Monroe Doctrine, the ideology of McCarthyism and the extensive company lobbying network in Washington, DC which was consistently successful and targeted both major political parties.
The United Fruit Company acted more or less as an imperialist colonialist power, an attitude which is reflected in its business strategy. The goal of the Company was to create a monopoly in the banana producing and exporting field, and they put pressure on the governments in banana-producing countries utilising their superior economic, political and even military might, its actions resembling those of the colonising countries of centuries past.
The Company believed that it could maintain its dominant position by promoting US interests in Latin America, but this did not happen. The United States government, while strongly supporting United Fruit's actions in Guatemala and acting on its behalf in 1954, ultimately forced the Company to respect antitrust laws, which are a cornerstone of healthy competition and thus economic progress.
United Fruit Company's business strategy failed. The Company today no longer exists in its former form, but the practices it introduced were and continue to be used extensively by the companies that followed, while the political, diplomatic and military handling of the issue by the US had serious implications for their American policy.
