The purpose of this master’s thesis is the study of ESG Principles, their response and integration by Greek shipping companies, as well as the respective management of their human resources. In contemporary times, the global economy is readjusting its principles, goals and modes of operation, pursuing sustainable development as a whole.
Shipping, being a decisive and main part of the global economy, develops, adopts and implements new methods and operating frameworks for the immediate and effective confrontation of environmental, social and corporate governance issues that are fully intertwined with sustainable development. Greek shipping companies that manage one of the largest fleets of ships internationally, in order to consolidate, maintain and develop their position and competitiveness in the global shipping industry by providing quality services, create and integrate strategies and practices that meet the ESG Principles investing equally in all three dimensions (environment – society –governance). Similarly, with the passage of time, Greek shipping companies, having realized the importance and contribution of their human resources to their efficiency, profitability and long-term success, being their most important and valuable resource, aim at the effective management of competent shore employees and crew members, applying a multitude of strategies and creating the appropriate working conditions, so that they can meet the demands and difficulties of the shipping industry.
