The role of the school management in managing and dealing with conflicts in school environment

Abstract
In the first part of this paper, the concept of conflicts in general and conflicts in the workplace and especially in school is studied and defined.
Conflicts as a difference of opinions and ways of acting are intertwined with both the life and the professional behavior of every organization that cooperates to achieve a common or several common goals. The educational organizations could not be exempted from this rule.
In this paper, the types of conflicts will be explored according to their characteristics, the ways they manifest, the conditions they derive from, and the people they include. Following that, the causes of conflicts will be sought as results of unsatisfied needs, different personalities, organizational weaknesses, conflicting goals, limited resources, different perceptions of responsibilities. The attitude of people towards conflicts will be studied and negatives results, like the lack of trust and cooperation spirit, which delay the achievement of the school goals and affect the climate of the school community, will be highlighted. Concurrently, the positive effects of conflicts will be explored which, by conducting a constructive dialogue and exchange of views, can lead the school unit to development and progress. The conditions for limiting conflicts and dealing with them when they appear are a key topic of study in this paper, in order to provide ideas and solutions for the harmonious cooperation in school units.
In the second part of the paper, the crucial role of school administration in the management of conflicts, in the school environment will be investigated. The term leadership and leader, as well as the concept of school management will be clarified, since the terms of “principal” and “leader” do not correspond to identical concepts. Then the duties of the director of the school unit will be investigated and his responsibility for creating a favorable school climate, which is necessary for the conflicts’ limitation. Finally, the management of conflicts by the school administration will be studied, as well as the skills a principal must have in order to successfully deal with this important issue and lead his school to achieve his vision, realize of his goals and use the different points of view and visions for the achievement of the common purpose.
