This paper studies female leadership in the context of education, its effectiveness and whether the current state of Greek society enables women who wish to do so to claim a position of responsibility. Furthermore, it traces the prejudices, stereotypes and sexism that exist regarding the female gender, its potential and its suitability to meet the responsibilities of a managerial position. In addition, it emphasizes the source of this racism, which stems either from the professional environment (school principals, school counsellors, directors of other schools or even male colleagues) or from the social environment (parents of pupils, local community). The participants in the survey carried out in the context of this study were female headmasters or vice-headmasters of primary or secondary schools and completed a questionnaire with a series of questions on female leadership, the obstacles encountered by women who exercise it and the opportunities and prospects offered to them with a view to their advancement to higher administrative levels in the educational hierarchy.
