Abstract
Providing quality education to the children of the Muslim minority in Thrace is
one of the greatest educational issues that Greek education policy has to deal with.
By referring to the principles and goals of intercultural education, this paper attempts to
present the special educational condition that prevails in Thrace and to outline the
specificity of the interventions required to achieve an intercultural approach in a
particularly politically and ideologically charged educational field. It is a fact that besides
the theoretical and pedagogical background, a very clear political framework determines
the education of the Muslim minority in Thrace. However, the education of the minority
and all the complex political and scientific questions raised about it, do not only concern
the Greek educational reality but are related to leading issues of intercultural education
and to educational policies applied both in historical and latest conditions of minority
presence worldwide.
