Abstract
The present research effort was completed in the context of my postgraduate
studies at the University of Piraeus, for the programme Economics of Education and
Management of Educational Units. The thesis includes five sections, four theoretical
and one concerning the research effort that was conducted for it.
The first section deals with educational inequality in the Greek educational
system. More specifically, first a general reference is made and described about what
educational inequality is. Then, a historical retrospective on the history of the Greek
educational system is presented. This is followed by a presentation of inequalities in
relation to access to higher education in our country. Then the aspects of educational
inequality are identified in relation to the link between educational inequality and the
labour market. And the section concludes by identifying the issues linking education to
wage inequality, income distribution, poverty and social exclusion.
The second section identifies the ways in which the Greek state addresses
educational inequality. First, the parameters of social inequality and governmental
obligations are identified. And then the effects of socio-economic inequalities and state
coercion are identified.
In the third section we dealt with social inequality in the European education
system and in particular the purpose of higher education in Western societies, the
expansion of higher education and contemporary trends of educational and social
inequalities. And the section concludes with the policy implications for them.
Finally, in relation to the theoretical part of our research, an approach to the issues of
educational inequalities in America is made. First, educational inequalities in America
are identified. This is followed by an analysis of the interventions that have been made
to eliminate them and the section concludes with the link that has been made regarding
education and the labour market.
Finally, in the next and last section, the re
search effort that has been done regarding educational inequality and the perception
that parents and teachers have, regarding educational inequality, is presented.
