This paper presents a general theoretical framework for Foreign Direct Investment
(FDI) and then extends the analysis through the analysis of direct investment for the
case study of Titan in the USA and Serbia. More specifically, in the first part of the
analysis where a theoretical background for FDI is developed, a historical review is
initially presented and then the steps that companies must follow in order to evaluate
alternative markets, to estimate the corresponding costs, benefits and any risks and to
select those markets with the greatest prospects for successful entry or expansion.
Then the modes of internationalization (the modes of entry of a company in a foreign
market) and the factors that determine the mode of entry by which a company will
choose to expand internationally are mentioned. After the definition of FDI, the types
of FDI are analyzed according to the method, motivations and type of expansion as
well as according to the direction of the financial flows. Then the factors that
influence investments of this type are presented and some theoretical approaches are
listed that explain the motivations for undertaking an investment initiative on the part
of the company.
The second part of the analysis first presents a historical overview of the Titan
Cement Group and then describes in detail its activity, its geographical presence as
well as the corporate priority strategies and values of the cement industry in question.
The group is then presented in the USA and Serbia after previously analyzing the
financial situation for each host country separately and then commenting on some
indicators related to Titan's economic, social and environmental performance for the
period of 2015 -2021. Finally follows the presentation of the conclusions obtained.
