The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors that influence the total out of pocket expenditure of the research participants for their personal health. First and foremost, we will analyze at a theoretical level the health systems that exist in the European Union and, subsequently, the out-of-pocket expenses in Europe as a whole as well as in the Mediterranean countries.
Furthermore, moving on to the next chapters, we will use data collected from the SHARE survey (Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe) in order to conduct a statistical analysis. In particular, in the second chapter, we present the variables, which were used, performing an initial descriptive analysis of the more important ones. Moreover, in the next chapter, we expand the examination of the one-dimensional analysis of our variables, proceeding later to the bivariate, during which we deal with the correlation or not of the variables under consideration. We enrich the method of descriptive statistics through use of graphs, frequency tables, independence tests as well as correlation measures. Next, in the fourth chapter, we will study and examine whether demographic factors, socio-economic factors and health factors, physical and mental, affect the total costs that a participant spends to stay healthy. This will be achieved through the appropriate logistic regression models. At this point, it is worth noting that the analysis of all data will be done through the use of the SPSS statistical program.
This summary concludes by mentioning that in the fifth and last chapter of our paper, we will list the main conclusions drawn from the data analysis. Finally, it is particularly important to note that factors related to health and certain demographic factors significantly affect the payment of out-of-pocket expenditures.
