Overview: The evaluation in the field of education constitutes an important tool supported by the European Union in order to promote quality in the educational work and teachers’ development.
Aim: The investigation of primary and secondary education teachers’ beliefs regarding the evaluation of schools and themselves as well as to highlight the factors which influence their attitudes.
Material and Method: The sample of the present study was 82 teachers and the data collection was conducted with the use of a questionnaire consisting of 4 unites with questions about demographic and professional characteristics, the necessicity of the evaluation generally and specifically of the school unit and teachers. Data analysis was conducted with the use of the statistical package SPSS v 19 and the statistical significance was set at p=0.05.
Results: The information regarding the evaluation process was found dissatisfying and although the majority considers the dialog between the bodies important their satisfaction with their communication with the Ministry was moderate. The majority believes that the evaluation of both the schools and teachers a necessity and the same applies for the use of its results to improve the weaknesses and the problems without them being freely accessible by all. The best method of evaluation was the combination of external and internal evaluation on the condition that the necessary skills are present. The major concerns were the acquisition of a positive climate of safety and the disruption of the relationships as well as worries regarding the objectivity of the evaluation. The factors that influence the beliefs regarding the evaluation were the work relationship, sex and age.
Conclusions: There is disbelief against the evaluation in education despite the recognition of its necessity. More studies need to be conducted in order to develop strategies which will promote the cooperation towards the effective and qualitative implementation of the evaluation in education.
