The rapid progress of information and communication technologies (ICT) has affected many sectors, including the health sector. ICTs can support the transformation of health systems and their transition to new models that focus on people and their needs. They can also contribute to increasing the efficiency, sustainability and resilience of health systems.
This study attempts to present the applications of digital technologies in the field of health. The first chapter presents the challenges facing the health sector, with health systems facing severe fiscal, climate and environmental pressures, while having to respond to the challenges of an ageing population, increasing multi-morbidity and chronic diseases, rising demands and expectations of citizens, and unequal access to health services.
The second chapter discusses digital health and its types, which are electronic health, mobile health, telemedicine and electronic health record. Through digital health, global health coverage can be achieved and services for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, as well as services for the wellness of citizens can be provided.
The third chapter discusses the other applications of digital technologies in health, which are precision medicine, artificial intelligence, blockchain and big data. Precision medicine is achieved with the help of robotics, genomics, 3D printing, and virtual and augmented reality.
Finally, this study presents in chapter four the future challenges that the healthcare sector will face and in chapter five the main conclusion that the digital transformation of the sector through information and communication technologies is as necessary as ever!
