Abstract

The cruise industry faces several environmental challenges as it significantly burdens the environment. This paper addresses environmental policies for tackling maritime pollution with particular reference to the cruise sector. First of all, an analysis of the importance to reduce the cruise ships pollution will be made by presenting through a brief historical background the disasters that have been caused to the environment over the years. References will be made to the breaches of regulations carried out by cruise ships over the years and then to the pollution they have caused due to accidents, due to their daily operation and due to the use of ballast water. Finally, there will be extensive reference to environmental policies and companies' efforts to reduce existing pollution. We will look at statistics that will help us understand the environmental impact of the cruise quantitatively and suggest some environmental policy proposals to reduce pollution in the future.
