The purpose of this work is to present and highlight the barriers faced by female teachers in their attempt to take up a leadership position. This is a bibliographic review work in which foreign and Greek bibliography was used. Through this work, an attempt is made to present the phenomenon in which women find it difficult to gain leadership positions in education, as well as the factors that contribute to the emergence of this difficulty. More specifically, the first chapter refers to the leadership applied in Greek schools. The main points presented in the first chapter is the definition of leadership, the concept of management in education, the forms of leadership, the role of the manager and finally and the characteristics of an effective manager. The second chapter contains information about women in leadership positions. In more detail, a brief historical background is presented, the interpretive approaches that have been formulated regarding the under-representation of women, the phenomenon of the glass ceiling, the threat of the stereotype and finally, the balance regarding professional and family life. Finally, the third chapter deals with obstacles and opportunities. In particular, the stereotypes that prevail in the field of education, the obstacles which are classified into two categories and the opportunities for the professional development of women. Concluding this work, it was found that although the majority of teachers are women, those in leadership positions are limited. This phenomenon is directly related to the wide range of obstacles they encounter in their attempt to take up leadership positions.
