The object of these work analyzes the façades characteristics of buildings located in Athens, during the
Neoclassical, Eclectic and Interwar period. In particular, the aim is to organize and analyze the
characteristics of the houses using the VRA Core 4.0 database model, as a reference.
This thesis is composed of six chapters. The first three chapters are divided in historical periods and
include a description of the houses’ external elements. Literature and web research, such as social media,
databases, web pages and digital libraries was conducted. Each chapter has seven sections from which
the first one refers to the geographical area of Athens. The second section analyzes the size of the
buildings and the conditions under the houses’ facades where organized. The third section refers to the
structural materials, the types of masonry and their decoration techniques. Moreover, the roofing
decoration described in the period of Neoclassical and Eclectic architecture. Building’s rhythmic and
morphological elements of architectural decoration are analyzed in fifth section, doors and windows’
decoration in sixth section and the characteristics of balconies in seventh section.
The fourth chapter of this thesis describes databases examples and clarifies the importance and the
reason of creating metadata about the Athens houses external characteristics, from 1885 until 1930.
The fifth chapter includes details about the creation of a database based on VRA Core 4.0 elements and
the databases that created separately for the Neoclassical, Eclectic and Interwar period. In conclusion the
last chapter indicates some ideas regarding the utilization of this database in culture.
