Multilingualism has in recent years become one of the key educational priorities of European Union policy. The European Union promotes multilingualism in education by contributing to the teaching and learning of foreign languages, the exchange of information and experiences. The paper provides a detailed presentation of the actions of the European Union & the European educational programs that promote multilingualism as well as data on the learning of foreign languages in Europe and in particular in Greece. In the second part of this paper, a detailed presentation of the German education system is made, focusing on the teaching of foreign languages by state. In addition, a case study is being conducted of the teaching of foreign languages to students of Fifth & Sixth Grade class of the Greek Primary School Wuppertal, which belongs to the state "Rhineland Westphalia".
