The role of cultural responsive leadership as a form of leadership in inclusive education

Effective inclusion of students with different cultural backgrounds in the school environment requires leadership that incorporates the characteristics of a cultural response. In the present exploratory study, the factors that hinder or facilitate the implementation of the leadership of the cultural response in Greek schools were examined. The research involved 10 principals of the Secondary Education of schools in Attica. The semi-structured interview was used as a research tool. Convenience sampling was used as sampling method. For the analysis of the qualitative results the content analysis was used by creating codes and thematic categories. The main conclusions of the research are the following: a) school principals show interest in the integration of immigrants in the school environment in the context of inclusive education, b) principals consider inclusive education important as it helps: to reduce stereotypes and promoting democratic values, creating open school environments that accept diversity, providing equal learning opportunities and reducing conflict, and promoting education for peace; c) principals apply some inclusion of immigrant children in the school unit (practices for the integration of students with different cultural backgrounds, dissemination of intercultural values in the school unit by creating the appropriate school climate, application of methods for teacher evaluation, etc.). The most important problems of the principals are the following: the lack of legislation, the lack of teacher training, the suffocating schedule, and the lack of care from the state. The suggestions made by the principals at the end of the research are the following: teachers training, exchange of good practices with other schools and assistance from the state with relevant legislative initiatives.
