Nowadays, ship pollution is a major environmental problem. Maritime environmental legislation has become increasingly stringent in recent years since the introduction of the MARPOL 73/78 regulations. The international MARPOL Convention 73/78 has strict rules, which relate to the disposal of chemical residues, sewage, and garbage, provided that certain conditions are met.
The release of chemicals into the marine environment occurs either by accidents or by the disposal of chemical waste resulting from the washing of tanker vessels carrying chemicals. Sewage and waste disposal concern any type of ship.
In this thesis, it will first mention the most important ship accidents that took place from 1976 to 2002 and created the need to mitigate maritime protection measures, establishing the International Convention MARPOL 73/78. A general description of the six Annexes of the Convention will then be made, outlining each one annex and when it came into force.
In addition, the specific requirements and restrictions concerning each separate annex will be analyzed in more detail, with an emphasis on the minimum values that must be met in matters such as distance from shore, ship speed, etc. The last part of this thesis has to do with the legal law that has entered into force at European and in the Greek nation, some additional international conventions that have been adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
