Shipping industry is one of the most important parts of global economy, while its complexity and unpredictable conditions makes necessary the use of investment valuation methods that assist in investment decision making. In addition, the need to raise large amounts of capital through various forms of financing creates an environment of competition around maritime finance, where the best player is the one who makes the best deals.
The purpose of this paper is to study and highlight all the methods used to evaluate and make investment decisions, focusing on those that did not exist in the past, or those existed but its use have become more intense in recent years. To be more specific, we mention and analyze the techniques used by companies to approve or reject an investment plan, followed by a comparison between them. What is more, we study the most important ways of hedging the risks that a shipping company faces every day by using derivative products and how this can affect its financial and shipping performance. Finally, we analyze all the ways of finance for a shipping company and which ones have been used the most in recent years and why, while a comparison between how the financial system operated before the 2008 crisis and how is acting now is made, as well as how this situation affected shipowners' decisions on raising capital. In particular, we mention the new guidelines that banks issued, and how these have affected the relationship between shipping companies and banks, which have been the main source of shipping funding for many years now.
