Purpose: The purpose of the thesis was to investigate the concept of Benchmarking, both
bibliographically and via research. This concept is related to an innovative form of effective
school management, which has been studied extensively in our thesis. Our research endeavor
focused on the application of this technique in both private and public schools and has detected
the degree of penetration and application in schools, as well as various issues that come up as a
barrier to its implementation.
Design / methodology / approach: In the present thesis, the quantitative research method was
followed and the questionnaire used was constructed after careful study of the relevant recent
articles which were reviewed in the bibliographic part of the work. The questions which made up
the tool were completely linked to the research questions that were determined at the beginning
of the research. In the context of this research project, secondary (public and private) schools
and, in particular, high schools in Attica, Crete, Laconia and Epirus were selected, where the
principals of these schools were invited to participate in the research. The questionnaire was sent
to the principals of the aforementioned school units via the Pan-Hellenic school network, and in
particular the questionnaire was sent via e-mail and via the social network Facebook. The
responses collected from the above-mentioned sample, after being checked for their quality and
accuracy, were entered into SPSS, where they were coded and analyzed in order to draw useful
conclusions.
Findings: One of the main findings of this thesis is the understanding of the fact that the
effectiveness of organizations is now measured by the outcome, namely the logical consequences
of their leaders' actions and decisions. A tool for succeeding such a thing is Benchmarking,
which has proven to promote students’ and schools’ performances. There are many benefits for
the tool under consideration in schools, but also there are many obstacles that need to be
overcome, some of which are Benchmarking’s technical complexity, the lack of human
resources, the difficulty in obtaining data and the lack of a comprehensive theory.
Originality / value: The results extracted from the present thesis are based on existing literature
on the subject and are also confirmed by the findings of the present research project. The current thesis is expected to be a useful tool for obtaining a sufficiently complete picture of the
benchmarking approach and its application in secondary public and private schools.
