This MSc thesis aims at developing and designing an analytics toolbox, in order to draw
conclusions and results that can contribute to better decision making and consequently
to a more efficient project management.
In the first chapter, an introduction is made to the topic of project management
nowadays where the volume and complexity of data makes Project Managers more and
more familiar with recording metrics and analyzing performance indicators in order to
reach clear conclusions.
In the second chapter, the literature analysis of the thesis describes the topics of data
analysis, the importance of analytics for project management, decision support,
analytical techniques that can be used, value of metrics and performance indicators
(KPIs). ). In this chapter, the above topics are analyzed in depth according to the modern
data analysis and project management literature, providing the theoretical knowledge
that a Project Manager must possess in order to manage complex and demanding
projects.
The third chapter explains the methodology of analysis based on a hotel renovation
project with a large amount of data and several specialties. At the same time, the key
elements that make up the Excel file and the Analytics Toolbox that was created to
analyze the specific project are listed.
The analysis and results chapter gives an illustrative description of the tools built, the
metrics, KPIs, charts and tables created, and explains the results and their utility for
improving project performance and decision making.
The fifth chapter presents the conclusions drawn from the research carried out and
evaluates the methods and techniques used.
At the end there is a reference to the bibliographic sources from which the knowledge
for writing this work was derived, then the annex contains the code written in Microsoft
Visual Basic to build the Analytics Toolbox in Excel.
