The main objective of the dissertation is to explore the association between public/private health insurance and mortality in Europe. In the first chapter, the characteristics of the different health insurance schemes are presented, demographic ageing and its consequences on welfare systems as well as factors related to mortality. In the second chapter, a descriptive analysis of the SHARE data used in the analysis has been carried out. The variables of interest include sociodemographic factors (age, gender, educational level), health related issues (specific chronic diseases such as cancer, stroke etc), behavioural risk factors (smoking) as well as variables pertaining to health insurance and health care. The descriptive analysis includes bar charts and frequency tables. The third chapter includes logistic regression models exploring the effects of the abovementioned factors on mortality. The main findings of the analysis highlight the importance of sociodemographic and health related factors on mortality as well as the significance of supplementary health insurance and of the financial ability to visit a doctor and purchase prescription drugs.
