Domestic waters are an integral part of Greece’s natural wealth and their quality should be managed so as to preserve both public health and the environment. The last decades, the wider Asopos area has been studied by many scientists regarding its pollution by hexavalent chromium, both because of the industry activating in the area and produces chromium waste and the composition of the rocks in the area containing significant chromium content. The identification of contamination sources of the surface and underground water of the area by this toxic pollutant as well as the development of the environmental framework based on geological and hydrogeological criteria as presented in detail in this project, are necessary to understand the extend of environmental degradation, and take appropriate measures for remediation and monitoring of the phenomenon.
Lastly, three (3) different predictions – scenarios, about the evolution of the Asopos Basin contamination in the future, are described based on climatological, technological and social factors as well as other scientific reports.
