The aim of this dissertation is the statistical analysis of the road accidents that occurred in Greece during the period 2010-2016 and the investigation of the socio-economic factors and the consequences involved. For the purpose of the study, vital statistics and hospital morbidity data collected by Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) were used. The main definitions and concepts relating to traffic accidents are presented and analyzed and some basic comparative statistical information on road accidents observed in Greece and in selected European countries are presented and discussed. Additionally, some elements of the theory of time series analysis with respect to mortality and morbidity data are presented. The computation of the basic demographic mortality and morbidity measures is carried out by age and gender, but the estimates of seasonal indices and other trend measures of the phenomenon are based on the available monthly statistical material which refers to total numbers of events.
The main findings of the work are as follows. The statistical analysis of the monthly data shows that the rates of the road accidents are higher during the summer months than in the winter months. Women are described as more cautious drivers than men. The proportion of older drivers involved in a traffic accident is lower than among younger drivers.
