On the threshold of the 21st century, the continuously changing socioeconomic conditions rendered necessary a redefinition of priorities within the European Union. More and more emphasis is being placed today on adult education and training which is considered one of the most important sectors than can help the European Union to respond successfully to the challenges of the Knowledge Society. The present paper attempts to describe European policies on Adult Education and Training since the 90’s and, particularly, since 2000 in order to investigate the impact on Greek adult education policy. Specifically, we will describe the recent European trends in adult education, the reforms than have been effected in Greece in that sector as well as the related programmes that are currently funded in Greece by the European Union.
