Mineral resources due to their specific characteristics are of interest in their exploitation. The quality and the quantity of the mineral resources in Greece attracts and favors the activation of mines for their exploitation, production and export. The process of extraction is achieved through appropriate methods (underground, superficial) that ensure their quality. The choice of method depends on the environment of the deposit.
The history of mining has begun since the Copper Age, and over the years it has continuously increased the exploitation of mineral materials. Mining Law regulates the rules for the management and exploitation as a basic lever for the development of the national economy.
The mining operations as processes leave their footprint on the environment, but the necessity of securing the natural environment and for the next generations has led to the environment being regarded as a self-protected property. The need to protect the environment and, in particular, the major industrial economies combined with major ecological disasters, especially at the end of the 20th century, led to the development of Environmental Law
The operation of mines is obligated to obey environmental laws in the process of its operation and after the processes for the restoration of the area.
