The modern pharmacy is a complicated structure that combines not only traditional but also very sophisticated ways of function. Thus it is necessary to follow a very specific strategy in order to be competitively developed. The pharmacist has the responsibility to provide the patient-client with the proper drug treatment in order to improve the quality of their life. At the same time, the changing social conditions urge the pharmacist ti take leading decisions towards the growth of their business.Nowadays, the role of the pharmacist demands the collection, processing and analysis of massive data which combined with his/her limited time lead to the need for theextensive use of Information Systems(IS)in pharmacies. This research study explores the organization and management of a pharmacy by the use of IS focusing on the pharmacies of the greek islands of the Aegean Sea (Chios, Lesvos). Specifically, the aim of this study is to examine their functional needs and to define the contribution of IS to their effective organization. Moreover, an additional objective of this study is the assessment of the alternative IS services in pharmacies, exploring their potentials and to what extend they are used by the pharmacists.A questionnaire was distributed to the pharmacists of two big greekislands, Chios and Lesvos. The questions aimed at the assessment of the IS potentials. The research resulted in the fact that the information systems are highly incorporated by the pharmacists in their daily professional routine through their use in logistics, completion of prescriptions, orders from providers etc. The degree of satisfaction regarding the above procedures reached relatively high levels. However, it is proved that the pharmacists do not take full advantage of the IS potentials regarding customized services to patients, which would offer them an exceptionally competitive advantage to the constantly gowing and changing professional field.
