The increase in global maritime trade has resulted in the increase in maritime traffic and, consequently, in transporting larger quantity of water ballast. The ballast is used to ensure safe navigation during the voyage, giving the ship stability and flexibility. Shipping with the transport of ballast water causes unintentional transport of alien species whose introduction into new environments can have devastating ecological and economic consequences for the local community. The International Maritime Organization and the US Coast Guard have a leading role in addressing the problem of invasive species into new ecosystems through the adoption of directives and regulations. In the Mediterranean region, invasive species have been identified, the presence of which has negative impact on the recipient’s communities, which related to ballast water management.
