The current study examines the ways in which coastal areas are managed, from an economic, social and environmental point of view in the context of sustainable growth. The first chapter focuses on the analysis of various coastal environments while describing their value and the dangers they are being threatened of. Later on I elaborate on the Integrated Coastal Zone Management systems, their goals, the criteria that can place them in priority, their analytical steps of implementation, and the pros and cons of the whole procedure. After that what follows is a brief but coherent description of a few good-practice examples of ICZM around the world, each with its distinct particularity and its common hurdles to overcome.
After that, I attempt to define the institutional framework, national and also that of the European union, with the interested parties, the diverse strategies, the current European Directives, and the Programs enhancing that attempt in the Mediterranean Sea.
Furthermore, I attempt to focus on the example of the Elefsis Gulf, for which I compile a statistical analysis of the yearly trend for a few very important indicators of water pollution. The aim is to prove once more, even with not the strongest of assumptions, the contribution of environmental friendly measures for the coastal zone in order to pursue sustainability for the society, the economy, and the environment. Finally, I go through the national legal framework of the ICZM, along with the basic principles that characterize those systems, the tools that can be used by anyone designing policies like that, the factors that can increase the so demanded compliance to the laws, technologic methods of monitoring the coastal activity, assistive program performance indicators, more general directions for the promotion of such initiatives, and also a short description of the wider umbrella policy, over the ICZM, the Marine Spatial Planning.
