5G refers to the next generation techniques on telecommunication facing the year of 2020. It is supposed to offer 100 times faster data transmission rate than LTE networks. The aim behind the effective deployment of 5G networks is the creation of an architecture that is able to provide flexibility, reconfigurability and programmability in order to support a wide and heterogeneous set of 5G use cases. Though the development of 5G networks is still in progress, it is considered that they are expected to accommodate services with very different requirements in terms of latency, bandwidth and reliability. Softwarization and virtualization are two cases considered to be at the basis of the design process of 5G networks. In literature, there are proposals that exploit softwarization and virtualization for the network design and functionality implementation of 5G networks. This work summarizes the characteristics of 5G networks and architectures proposed for 5G technology. An overview on recent advances considering the role of softwarization and virtualization is presented as well as a report on several 5G application projects taking into account the design process of 5G networks. A part of this work focuses on 5G – Ensure, a project that concerns security and privacy on 5G networks and constitutes a security architecture that includes AAA mechanisms and privacy – enhancing technologies.
