The purpose of the study is twofold: firstly, to explore the present legal frameworks of the cross-borders electronic prescribing in the European Union and secondly to evaluate whether the existing frameworks should be further developed to remove potential barriers of e-prescribing in all the EU countries.
This research paper seeks to identify ways on how the two main social sciences, namely legal and economic, could be combined to resolve problems arising from the organization and financing of health care, when patients seek medical care in another EU Member State, other than their country of residence.
In overall, the last years, the use of electronic prescription in the European Union has been designated as a policy of high importance with respect to improving the health care system in Europe. Regarding the legislative framework of the European Union, the European Commission has been investing in eHealth technologies through targeted initiatives and the establishment of the Action Plan for a European eHealth Area.
This dissertation, is one of the few research studies, that deepen in the process of cross-border e-prescribing in the European Union, as it compares the existing prescription systems in Europe and the current challenges (mainly institutional).
