This essay deals with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code),which was created on 12 December 2002 by the IMO, among the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS 74).
It also, sets out how to apply security measures to ships and port facilities in order to avoid terrorist threats and other criminal activities.
In the first chapter, the International Maritime Organization(IMO) is presented, as I want to highlight its involvement in the shaping of SOLAS and more specifically to the ISPS.
Moreover, an analysis of the structure of the IMO, as well as its main activities, is made.
In the next chapter, an analysis of the SOLAS 74 Convention, which is considered to be the most important international convention in the field of maritime safety, is being analyzed. The main purpose of the Convention is to lay down the minimum standards for the construction, equipment and operation of ships in order to ensure their safety by adapting these specifications to technical knowledge and technological developments. The Convention defines the specifications of different types of vessels, as well as the issue of certificates certifying that a ship complies with the necessary standards.
The chapter 3 mainly deals with the ISPS Code's obligations on shipping companies (vessels), ports and Contracting States.
An extensive reference is made to what all parties have to do to comply with the code.
Finally, we can observe the implementation of the ISPS Code in international organizations and partnerships and how the ISPS Code can be economically imprinted through the eyes of each user.
