The quality of life to patients with cancer is a very crucial issue, which is constantly under investigation. The current research has been conducted through a combination of two scales which are both specified on investigating the quality of life for patients with cancer. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy (FACT-G) and the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale (MSAS) are being studied in order to examine in depth the factors that affect them.
In this analysis a database of 200 patients with cancer was used, including two measurements, where each measurement corresponds to a cycle of chemotherapy. In each cycle, the patients were asked to fill in four questionnaires related to these two scales, as well as some demographic data.
Firstly, non-parametric tests for independent and related samples, and Pearson’s Chi-Squared test were used. In addition, the method of multiple linear regression was applied in FACT-G scale and the method of multiple logistic regression was applied in MSAS scale. Furthermore, correspondence analysis and Cronbach's Alpha index were applied in order to analyse the patients’ profile and the reliability of FACT-G scale, respectively.
The results indicate that scales are related with some demographic factors as well as with some side-effects of the chemotherapy, such as vomiting and nausea during the first four days after receiving chemotherapy. Also, FACT-G scale seems to be a reliable scale.
