A great deal of our knowledge regarding the High Seas and Deep Ocean basins is the result of research missions that have taken place over the last 15 to 20 years. Our governments and societies face a major challenge of exploiting and managing offshore seas. Oceans are very important to the survival of the human race for many reasons: they regulate the climate, provide food and are the most important way of transporting people and goods around the world. In recent years and due to the enormous development of technology the sea is an important source of minerals, energy and pharmaceutical substances. Sustainable management of the sea’s natural resources is high on the agenda of the international community since continued global population growth; climate change; marine pollution and increased competitiveness for extraction of natural resources pose a threat to the sea’s vital resources.
The natural resources’ importance coupled with the broader concern of their unprecedented exploitation creates the need for the implementation of measures at a national and international level.
