Abstract

In order to find out whether there is indeed a trend towards establishing "green ships", we must first observe historical developments at the political level, which have contributed to the protection of the marine environment. This will bring us to the present situation of what is happening and what is not in this area. Before that, however, we need to look more closely at the role of the ship in international transport and the role of International Shipping Organizations. Then we will monitor maritime policy as compared to the US and the EU, and special attention will be paid to the organization of shipping companies. Classification of pollutants is also important in this research effort to protect the marine environment. But we must first separate the kinds of pollution to see what the results are. In the present essay we will also note what policies are trying to protect us from marine pollution and what tools we have to combat it. Of course, the reference to those international treaties signed by States and Organizations and related to marine pollution could not remain unmentioned. The Green Ship of the Future, the Inventory of Hazardous Materials and the Energy Efficiency Design Index are also mentioned. Finally, some concluding comments have been made after the bibliographic research on the developments leading to the establishment of "green" ships. In the last chapter of this paper I will try to answer the question whether one can finally record the expected results of the introduction of “green” ships.
