Nowadays, Greek shipping companies, under conditions of financial crisis, have to face several challenges. Some of these are to deal with fuel expenses, to save resources and to compile with increasingly stringent international conventions for managing climate change and marine pollution. In such a context, a future suggestion that can solve many of the above mentioned problems is the switching to the use of renewable energy.
The aim of this diploma thesis was to investigate the feasibility of installing photovoltaic on passenger ships in Greece. The analysis that has taken place has shown that the investment in photovoltaic on the merchant shipping vessel is far from being feasible, as the net present value in all cases is negative and is far from the price Indifference. On this basis, it is proposed to use a 'Pay as you save' model, which can lead to more favorable results in the feasibility of the investment action.
