The aim of this paper is to investigate which is the most economical and practical way
to reduce SOX emissions from ships to the atmosphere.
More specifically, the enforcement of new terms of MARPOL, ANNEX VI which
establish the reduction of emissions at specific areas (SECA areas) with the intention
of removing air emissions which create environmental pollution and have negative
impact on people’s health. For that reason and as we want to reach a conclusion, we
will analyse the ways that shipping deals with this during this period of time. Briefly,
these are: use of Ultra Low Sulphur Fuel Oil and in the future use of Marine Gas
oil/Marine Diesel Oil and installation of scrubbers of SOX emissions. The finding of
the best and most economical solution is mandatory as there is a big threat of moving
to other ways of transferring cargos, from ships to other more economical ways (cargo
trains, Trans-Siberian Railway) as the use of cleaner and as a result more expensive
fuels or installation of scrubbers will have as a result the increase of ships’ operating
costs.
