Abstract

The maritime sector is characterized by intense dynamism and continual growth nowadays. The port industry, which is a branch of the maritime, is continually being improved in order to be able to adjust to the developments and as a result has gained a more powerful role than the simple one it used to have for carrying of goods or passengers. With all this modernization of the ports, the research and measurement of the performance of ports have become determining issues for their further evolution. This study focuses on the measurement through indices. A list of indicators that have resulted from a series of researches and organized and concerted programs is presented. Next, an effort is being made to use some of these indicators in cruising sector and specifically in the terminal of Piraeus for the period of 2011 – 2015. The results were not so positive for this period, since most of them had been reduced. However, there is a strong potential for further dynamic development of the port in the future, since there do exist powerful and contemporary infrastructure, concerted transport system for linkage with inland and also all the necessary components in order to cope with the demands of a strong performance and productivity. In addition, there is made a short benchmarking analysis with the port of Kusadasi for the years 2013 and 2015, in which while Piraeus is first, the results have a deeper meaning, because they imply a higher increase of the competitiveness of Kusadasi since it has bigger rates of growth than Piraeus for these specific years.
