Great interest in the scientific community has been caused by the organization, structure and performance of the Islamic financial system. The purpose of this dissertation is to compare the western and the Islamic way of financing banks in the shipping industry. The method used to investigate the above question is the bibliographic review. The incentives that encourage borrowers to apply for a loan are multiple, but with regard to the shipping industry they are usually related to the qualitative increase or replacement of the existing fleet. In the first part of the paper there is an extensive reference to the way in which bank financing is used in the shipping through loans. This form of financing is the most widespread in the shipping industry so far. There are many bank products tailored to the needs of borrowers (shipowners). However, the conditions for the granting of a shipping loan are varied and mainly relate to the reputation of the borrowed loan and the guarantees required. The second part of the paper presents the basic principles of Islamic
funding. In an Islamic transaction, interest is forbidden, and this is the basic difference between Islamic and conventional funding. The main financial products promoted by Islamic funding are Musharaka, Mudarabah, Murabahah and Injara. The majority of these products are spreading risks, losses and profits between the parties. Over the years, the Islamic way of financing is increasingly entering the financial world of the Western world, as it is an innovative solution.
