From the ancient times, people seek to feel safe and try to confine the factors that create
uncertainty for the future. Private insurance does exactly that: it provides collateral in the event of a
random, unpleasant event with negative economic consequences for the life of the individual and his
/ her family.
In this study we will focus on health insurance, its types and its characteristics and the
premium, looking mainly at its components and how each one is affected by various economic factors.
We will also deal with social and private insurance by looking at which categories of the population
prefer private or government insurance or stay uninsured in the US.
The work is divided into two parts. The first part reviews the relevant literature, while the
second part presents the empirical study.
More specifically, in the first part of the paper, the first chapter presents the health insurance
sector, with its basic characteristics and the main products available to consumers, in Greece. The
second chapter attempts a review of the Greek, European and Global insurance market and its course
in recent years. In the third chapter, the main components of the health premium are listed and each
of them is analyzed.
In the second part of the thesis, the data concerning health insurance, private and social, are
presented for the USA, for the years 2014-2015. The study is closed by presenting the empirical
results and drawing useful conclusions.
